This talk will draw on archival materials to explore initial reactions to World War I in the Russian hinterland. Topics addressed will include the problem of jingoism at the outbreak of war, differences between urban and rural perceptions of the war, riots of conscripts during the mobilizations of 1914, and peasant resistance to state appropriations. Sergei Kazakovtsev is Assistant Professor of History at Viatka University in Kirov, Russia. He is currently a Fulbright Scholar in residence at
