A Russian European as a phenomenon of Russian culture is one of the perennial questions in Russian history and literature. How did Russian intellectuals of the early nineteenth century perceive Europe and what did the concept “Europe” mean for Russian educated society? Tatiana Saburova is Professor of History at Omsk State Pedagogical University. She has published on Russian intellectual life in the “long” nineteenth century and is a Fulbright scholar in residence at Indiana University.
