This talk will address some aspects of the inspiration and methodology behind Professor Evtuhov’s recent book, Portrait of a Russian Province: Economy, Society and Civilization in Nineteenth-Century Nizhnii Novgorod. The post-reform period witnessed a proliferation of published documentation at the local level, ranging from “statistical” (often descriptive) handbooks to local thick journals to papers of the Provincial Archival Commissions.
